This year, Ulrike Voelcker has also taken an interest in Paris lace.
She presents ten models of this little-known lace in a fold-out format that includes pricking patterns, diagrams, photographs, and explanations.
Paris lace is distinguished by its hexagonal ground crossed by a horizontal thread that forms triangular meshes. The motifs are outlined with a corded contour and are usually composed of flowers, leaves, roses, and clovers that stand out against a net decorated with small dots. It is also characterized by the delicacy and fineness of its threads, the harmony of its ornamental patterns, and its distinctive ground made with three pairs at each crossing. Traditionally, it features floral motifs, stylized leaves, small networks, and geometric elements that combine to create balanced and light compositions. In this work, Ulrike Voelcker develops modern designs of her own creation, using this technique that has been relatively little explored by lace-makers.
The fold-out format allows several pieces to be displayed continuously, creating a small textile gallery that invites the viewer to examine each design in detail. When opened, the reader discovers a sequence of ten different models that illustrate the variety of motifs, densities, and compositions characteristic of Paris lace.
Beyond its aesthetic value, the fold-out also functions as a source of inspiration and learning for those interested in lace, especially in the field of bobbin lace. Each model can serve as a reference for studying composition, understanding the relationship between ornamental elements, and observing how filled and empty spaces are balanced.
Overall, this fold-out not only brings together ten examples of Paris lace but also offers a small visual exploration of its style. By comparing the different models, the observer can appreciate the creative diversity that exists within the same textile tradition, where technical precision is combined with the great artistic sensitivity of the author, Ulrike Voelcker.
